Are you washing your face properly?

How to wash your face

Ok so you’re thinking - she’s joking right? No am serious. Do we really know how to properly clean and wash our face daily?

It is so important to do it the right way so your skin is clean and fresh. Plus it’s a good skin habit. Not everyone uses these steps. It's literally splash your face with water and rub off with a towel. Well there’s a technique to everything, specially when it comes to something so simple yet delicate.

Here's my tips on how to wash your face correctly.

1. Wash your face with warm water.

Once you’re awake and brushed your teeth. Start off by washing your face with warm water. Using your hands, wash your whole face and neck area. Make sure your hands are washed before doing this and if you use any soap product or hand wash then it is clean from it so it doesn't transfer on to your face. Wash your face with warm water as this is more gentle on your skin. Don't wash with hot or cold straight away as this can irritate your skin barrier specially if you’re sensitive, acne prone or even have large pores.

2. Use a face wash or cleanser. Suitable for your skin type.

Once your face is washed with warm water, it is now easier for any face wash or cleanser to work on your skin instead of applying on to dry skin to help clean and do it’s job. It’s important to use a good wash that suits your skin type. I personally find soaps very drying. I have tried a few and find moisturising washes work better for my dry skin. You may need to try a few to see which works best for your skin and have a few for different seasons. Well we are at a time were there are thousands of skin care products so I say scrap the old school soap method and get your self a decent face wash. Washing with a good face wash helps remove all bacteria, dirt and dead skin that was formed during the night while you were sleeping. Some people who have extreme dry skin can skip washing skin with any types of products during the morning, this may help avoid more drying. However don’t skip when using treatments or retinol products the night before. Do wash your skin with a product to remove any build up.

3. Exfoliate - This method should be done maximum twice week.

Exfoliating your skin is a great way of really deep cleaning your skin specially those who have flaky, dry skin surfaces. There are many homemade remedies you can use to do this as well as great drugstore and branded product's out there in their market. Again use the ones that is suitable for your skin type and only do this, the amount of times recommend by brand you choose to use. I will give you more information and advice on exfoliation on a different post.

4. Finish off with Cold water.

Not everyone will agree but I believe by finishing off your face with a splash of cold water helps to close off your pores. So no dirt or bacteria can get inside your open pores after. (Don’t take it literally, pores don’t open and close but more like softens and tightens when using certain temperature)

5. Drying your face.

Right so this step you must pat dry not rub. Pat drying allows you to be gentle to your skin. Anyone who suffers from acne prone skin, sensitive, blemishes any sort of problematic skin. I would advise using clean face towels regularly. Wash your flannel at least twice a week to get rid of any build up dirt or bacteria while using and drying. (If you have a weeks worth of flannels, that even better to really keep up with clean towels for daily use) To be honest you don’t even need to dry, I actually love leaving the skin wet and air dry. This makes it easier for toning stage or the next stage in your skin care regimen.

These step seems like it’s a chore for some but I promise it can take 5 - 10 minutes in your bathroom during the morning and evening and this with change your skin game when done regularly and properly.

Once the face wash step is achieved correctly then you can mist, tone and moisturise your skin.
